PSSNY Participates in CVS Aetna Hearing
Tuesday, June 5, 2018
On Monday, Melissa Schulman, CVS Health's senior vice president of government relations and Paul Wingle, Aetna's Vice President, Operations, Products and Technology, were questioned for more than two hours by the Assembly Health and Insurance committees regarding their proposed merger.
PSSNY provided testimony by invitation.
"This is a big deal; this is transformational in health care in a way that many of us have not seen in our lifetimes," Assembly Insurance Chairman Kevin Cahill (D-Kingston) said. "Has CVS paused to understand the gravity of the responsibility you're taking on?"
Assemblyman Health Chairman Dick Gottfried (D-Manhattan) commented, "You won't have to choose a hospital, you'll go to the one CVS and Aetna chose for you - that'll be simpler," ....it does scare the pants off me."
Overall, the Assembly was skeptical of the promises of innovation, patient-centered care and streamlining of a fragmented health care system that the two parties claimed would improve its offerings for consumers.
Gottfried indicated there would likely be at least one more hearing on the deal on a non-session day so that they could dedicate more time to the issue and solicit more input.
