Target Audience: Pharmacist and student pharmacists in all practice settings.

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- identify "Red Flags" as a means of testing the validity of a controlled prescription;
- identify the role of DHHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) in the oversight of healthcare providers in prescription and durable medical supplies billing activity for Medicare and Medicaid patients;
- list types of behavior in a pharmacy which can result in criminal charges based on deliberate ignorance and willful blindness including charging the pharmacist of a conspiracy with less than legitimate parties involved in the distribution of controlled drugs;
- list three basic steps required for the accurate use of the electronic system known as Controlled Substance Ordering System (CSOS) in the completion of an electronic order for Schedule II controlled substances;
- list the benefits of checking the NYS Patient Monitoring Program and ways to keep illegal patients who doctor shop out of your respective pharmacy;
- list key issues that pharmacy benefit managers are using for termination of provider status post audit of the pharmacies;
- identify the authority of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Officer and their Diversion Control (Diversion);
- state administrative or civil actions taken by DEA for failure of a pharmacy to maintain records for controlled substances;
- identify due diligence requirements for controlled substance prescriptions;
- list steps to take to prevent theft and significant loss and what to do when it occurs.
