Prevention & Management of Influenza and Related Conditions in the Winter Months

At the completion of this activitythe participant will be able to:

·List the most common respiratory viral illnesses encountered during the winter months and how they usually present in at-risk patients;

·Discuss the differences betweeninactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) and live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) and the recommended indications for each;

·Describe the relative effectiveness and the role of antiviral agents in the prevention of influenza among high-risk patient populations;

·Compare oseltamivir and zanamavir with other antiviral agents and outline the appropriate use of each product for the management of influenza;

·Suggest other appropriate therapies for the symptomatic relief of respiratory illnesses commonly encountered in the winter months.
