At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

· examine the new Fraud, Waste, Abuse and Compliance initiatives regarding Medicare Part B and Medicare Part D enrollment, audit and recovery issues;

· describe the effect of the Affordable Care Act on pharmacy compliance with dispensing of federally and state funded prescription programs;

· list the annual compliance requirements for participation in the NYS Medicaid Prescription Program in the state operated 'fee for service' and the Managed Care Organizations managed Medicaid programs;

· identify pharmacists responsibility in compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Account-
ability Act to protect patient privacy;

· identify where to check for excluded & disqualified prescribers as well as employees due to various violations of health care laws and regulations;

· describe the role of the DEA;

· identify accepted methods of maintaining records for a DEA inspection;

· describe accepted methods of maintaining an inventory system for controlled substances;

· describe accepted methods of security for controlled substances;

· discuss drug usage trends and the importance of checking the Patient Monitoring Program;

· identify the means to verify a pain medication prescription for validity.
